Professional Development Grant Awarded to Three CUNY Librarians

“I very much appreciate receiving the LACUNY grant,” said Professor Smale, who will be using the funds to attend the ACRL National Conference in Indianopolis. “I’ve been a member of the CUNY Games Network—a group of CUNY faculty and staff who use games in teaching—for four years now, and it’s an honor to bring our work and the work that I’ve done in our library at City Tech to a national conference.”

Brooklyn College’s Jane Cramer Receives Mildred Lowe Award

“I am very humbled,” said Professor Cramer, upon winning the 2012 NYLA/GIRT Mildred Lowe Award. “I found my niche when I started working with government documents and to be recognized for that work is humbling.” She also expressed gratitude to those who helped advance her career, particularly to Stephanie Walker, head librarian at Brooklyn College. “A lot of special collections these days are being squeezed out, but we have a director who understands the importance of the documents collection and the people who work there. I am grateful to have a staff that cares about the collection as much as I do.”

“Teresa McManus, BCC’s chief librarian, is enthusiastic that the building she’s been working on for several years is now a reality.

“This beautiful library with its hub of activity is a priceless treasure for Bronx Community College and the City University of New York and for current and future students,” she said in an email. “The environment is designed to accommodate student needs for access to information and learning resources in multimedia as well as print formats for research and to complete assignments. The library provides access to 21st Century intellectual products and learning tools, for example with delivering access to multimedia educational resources 24/7 from any location, as well as e-books supplementing print and web delivered collections of research and scholarship.” (story published in Community College Week)

Brooklyn College Chief Librarian to Speak at the ACRL/NY 2012 Symposium

“Cultivating Entrepreneurship in Academic Libraries” is the title of the 2012 Academic and College Research Libraries-New York symposium to be held at Baruch College on December 7, 2012. The symposium, to take place at the William and Anita Newman Vertical Campus Conference Center, explores the different strategies academic libraries are adopting in response to increasing economic pressures, technological changes and user demand.

QCC and CSI Libraries Host New York Archives Week, October 7-13, 2012

The libraries of Queensborough Community College and the College of Staten Island College will be among the institutions in the city’s archivist community to host New York Archives Week, October 7-13, 2012. The Archivist Round Table of Metropolitan New York (ART), a group of more than 550 members, will coordinate a series of free historical and genealogical activities, including open houses, exhibitions, lectures, workshops and behind-the-scenes tours of archives in New York City. New York Archives Week is annual celebration aimed at informing New Yorkers about the diversity of information resources available in the city’s trove of archival materials.

The Greater New York Chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries is pleased to announce its annual call for poster session proposals for the 2012 ACRL/NY Symposium, “Cultivating Entrepreneurship in Academic Libraries.” The symposium will focus on academic librarians who seek out new opportunities for collaboration, innovation and creative service offerings that meet our users’ evolving needs with limited resources. We will explore how academic librarians can actively promote risk-taking and develop an entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial approach to service.

The CUNY-Shanghai Library Faculty Exchange Program

The librarian exchange between The City University of New York (CUNY), Shanghai University, and Shanghai Normal University took place spring 2010-fall 2011. The exchange built relationships and strengthened collaborative intent between the Chinese and American libraries, enabling CUNY’s Baruch College to design a second phase of the program, which will launch in September, 2012.
