Three College of Staten Island (CSI) students are among the 28 participating in the CUNY Leadership Academy, the flagship leadership program of The City University of New York. Representing CSI are Peter DeCresenzo, History/Secondary Education; Nervana Gaballa, Communications; and Jose Saltos, Biochemistry.
Three Lehman students – Jo-Ann Winter, Dennis Kim, and Keith Lewis – have been selected to participate in CUNY’s new Leadership Academy. The Academy is part of CUNY Vice Chancellor for Student Development Garrie Moore’s vision to create a campus-wide institution aimed at creating and empowering future leaders.
On November 13, New York City Council honored Lehman’s Center for Urban Male Leadership (UML) with a formal proclamation for its work with black and Latino males. Speaker Christine Quinn and Councilman Larry B. Seabrook were officiates of the ceremony, along with student members Vice President of Student Affairs Jose Magdeleno, Associate Dean John Holloway, and Professor Michael Deas, the Center’s director in attendance. The young men wore blue membership jackets and smiles.
John Jay students make up nearly one-quarter of the students selected for the inaugural group of the CUNY Leadership Academy Program–the largest single delegation from any CUNY campus in the new program.
On Sept. 19 the City University of New York’s 16 student government leaders attended the Presidential Conference, hosted for the first time by Baruch College. At this meeting, presidents from different campuses exchanged ideas, shared resources and socialized.
ANTWAUN GAVINS is a young African-American male, child of a single mom, and brother to 10 siblings also trying to succeed in a sometimes difficult city. A junior at John Jay College, Gavins, 20, looks forward to earning his bachelor’s degree and then attending law school. But he wants more than that. He wants to be a leader.
Television journalist and author Dominic Carter received CUNY’s Community Service Leadership Award at a ceremony attended by faculty, students and administrators of the CUNY Leadership Academy.
