As you know, the nation of Haiti is confronting the devastating effects of a powerful earthquake that struck on January 12. Many of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni trace their ancestry to Haiti and may have family members, friends, and colleagues in the affected areas. I know that you share my deep concern about the tragic impact of the earthquake on the residents of Haiti, the hemisphere’s poorest country, and on our CUNY community.
I have designated Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Peter Jordan to lead a University-wide effort to encourage contributions to assist the Haitian people through relief agencies designated by the City or State of New York. I have also asked college presidents and deans to designate a campus relief coordinator to organize and support local relief activities and humanitarian efforts and to participate in University-wide meetings.
Interim Vice Chancellor Jordan’s office will communicate directly with presidents and dean with further details. In the meantime, on behalf of the University, I extend my condolences to those members of the CUNY community who are suffering the effects of this grievous disaster.
Thank you for your concern and assistance.
