The College held its 2013 Convocation and Award Ceremony in the beautiful Celeste Bartos Forum at the New York Public Library.

On September 4 Guttman Community College held two special events to honor entering and returning students to the college.  A morning Convocation marked the start of the new academic year as the college officially welcomed the entering class of 2013. September 4 was also the conclusion of the 12-day Summer Bridge Program, a required introductory session for incoming students. President Scott E. Evenbeck served as moderator.

Convocation began with a moving video presentation about the philanthropic legacy of Stella and Charles Guttman, whose names the college now bears in recognition of the historic endowment gift from the Guttman Foundation in June 2013. Isa Adney, a noted advocate of community college education and bestselling author of Community College Success, gave the keynote address. Ms. Adney shared her own life story about how she overcame considerable obstacles to succeed as a community college student. She encouraged Guttman students to build a college community and to take advantage of the support they receive. She emphasized that “no one does success alone” by highlighting the importance of reaching out to others to fulfill one’s potential.

Former Guttman Student Government Association President Stephen Icaza and current President Alfajo Jallow gave welcome remarks. Convocation concluded with a Summer Bridge photo collage video created by inaugural class student Richard Persaud.

In the afternoon an Award Ceremony was held to recognize the inaugural class’ outstanding academic achievement, community service and leadership to the college. Isa Adney again gave the keynote address. The event concluded with a photo collage video highlighting the inaugural class’s first year at Guttman Community College.

“These two events brought us together to celebrate the special qualities that make Guttman such a rich community not only for our students but for faculty and staff as well. We are delighted to welcome our second class to the college and look forward to a successful year. We were also gratified to honor the academic and leadership excellence of many members of our inaugural class whose achievements are a testament to their hard work and commitment to the college,” affirmed Scott E. Evenbeck, President of Guttman Community College.
