Second-year Guttman Community College student Gibsy Lino received the 2014 Campus Compact Frank Newman Civic Fellows Award. The Newman Civic Fellows Award is named for Dr. Frank Newman, one of the founders of Campus Compact, who dedicated his life to creating opportunities for student civic learning and engagement.
Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents—representing some 6 million students—who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education to improve community life and to educate students for civic and social responsibility. The Newman Civic Fellows Award is generously sponsored by the KPMG Foundation. Through this award, Gibsy is recognized for her public involvement and motivation to create lasting change. Gibsy’s nomination indicates that she is a leader who inspires not only other students, but also the entire campus and community.
Ms. Lino has consistently dedicated her time and talents to serving those in need throughout New York City. During the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2013, for example, she helped to rebuild houses in Far Rockaway, Queens. She also coaches senior high schools students at the Manhattan International High School to help them enroll successfully in college and volunteers with cerebral palsy patients.
At Guttman Community College, Ms. Lino serves as an Academic Success Peer Mentor to support fellow students on academic matters and is an executive member of the Trending News Update Club (TNU) that engages students in discussions about current issues. Additionally, she is a member of the CUNY Malave Leadership Academy in New York City. At the college’s 2013 Convocation Ms. Lino was included on the Honors List 2012-2013 for high academic achievement and received the Leadership and Service Award. Gibsy Lino also received the prestigious Student Leadership Award from the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Frank D. Sanchez for outstanding leadership through academic and service-related activities during the 2012-2013 academic year. As a Human Services major, Gibsy Lino aspires to further her studies to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in order to continue serving her community.
