Gay Talese: Father of The New Journalism

June 5, 2007 | CUNY Lecture Series

Literary legend Tom Wolfe credited him for inventing a new form of nonfiction writing called “The New Journalism” back in the 1960′s, with his influential articles, including “Frank Sinatra Has a Cold” in Esquire (1966). For over a half-century, Gay Talese has dazzled his readers using the same tools he started out with as a cub reporter for the New York Times in 1960-a combination of boundless curiosity and endless perseverance. In an engrossing talk, as part of the Kingsborough Community College’s Best-Selling Author Series, Talese explains the importance of in-person interviews and why his researching style-eschewing the use of phones, the Internet, even a tape recorder-continue to work for him right to the present.
