No Irish Need Apply

Long before U2, there was Irish….the language that is. The strain of Gaelic spoken in Ireland, known as Irish, along with seemingly every other export from the Emerald Isle these days, is gaining in popularity. No one knows that better than Professor Thomas Ihde, director of the Institute for Irish-American Studies at Lehman College. Last year the IIAS received a $40,000 grant from the Irish government to develop Gaelic courses and interest has grown way beyond the Celtic community. “Over 50% of the students who attend our classes do not have any link with Ireland,” says Prof. Ihde.

Tito Puente: "El Rey"

Known equally as the “The King of the Mambo” and “The King of Latin Music,” Tito Puento ruled over a musical kingdom that spanned the cha-cha of the 1950′s to today’s salsa. In celebration of his enduring contribution, Hostos Community College has launched Phase One of the Tito Puente Legacy Project, a permanent exhibit showcasing his musical instruments, recordings, sheet music, photographs and other personal memorabilia on display in the college library. Hostos President Dolores Fernandez discusses the impact of Puente’s legacy in el Barrio and the world beyond.

The best-selling author of eight books and a columnist for Newsweek, Ms. Quindlen shares her ideas on writing, feminism and politics with Ms. Pollitt, a columnist at The Nation since 1980. Ms. Pollitt, whose “Subject to Debate” column was the recipient of 2003 National Magazine Award, also reads from her new book of personal essays, “Learning to Drive and Other Life Stories.”

Retired Navy Master Chief Wilfred Cotto knows what it’s like to be in charge. A 28-year veteran, he commanded thousands of naval personnel aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, and served in Operations Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. Now, as the new Coordinator of Veteran Affairs, he wants to continue to help veterans by introducing them to educational programs, career opportunities and other support services available through the University Office of Veteran Affairs.
