Chancellor's Report to the Board of Trustees

Chancellor Matthew Goldstein reports on enrollment growth, the academic profile of the freshman class, and more than 800 new faculty faces at the colleges. Volatility in the financial marketplace creates uncertainty for future state budgets, but there is good news on the local, state and federal level including a proposed major increase in federal Pell grants .The CUNY Campaign for the Colleges is on track to raise $1.2 billion in private support by March 2008.

Social Security Alert

The next crackdown: The Social Security Administration wants employers of immigrant workers who hold Social Security cards to ensure that these identifications are valid. Are We Safer?

Six years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks a majority of New Yorkers said they felt safer in a recent poll. Prof. Joseph King interprets the poll’s findings and discusses the pros and cons of the Lower Manhattan Security Initiative. The plan, among the most ambitious security efforts ever undertaken, will be capable of providing live feeds and search for suspicious activity through a network of closed-circuit cameras in the Financial District.

$1 Million Gift for Brooklyn's "Davidow Center"

From treating children’s ear infections to dispensing hearing aids to the elderly, the Brooklyn College Speech and Hearing Center has been an integral part of the community since 1931. Coinciding with its 75th anniversary, Diana Rogovin Davidow—class of ‘66 and one-time clinical supervisor—donated $1 million to the center, which has been renamed in her honor. Program director Gail Gurland, along with clinic director Michael Bergen, discuss the changing roles of the center, one of the oldest and largest in the U.S., serving hundreds of people each year for speech and hearing evaluations, language therapy, and audio rehabilitation.

New Proposal for Green Card Holders

A new proposal by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services would require nearly 750,000 lawful permanent residents carrying “green cards” without expiration dates to replace their current cards. Allan Wernick explains the implications of this rule, which was announced in August, and how to apply for a new Permanent Resident Card, commonly known as a “green card.”

Head For The Hills

Deborah Balk, associate professor at Baruch College’s Public Affairs, says that without proper precautions, low-lying coastal areas are increasingly vulnerable to environmental disasters. In her lecture entitled, “The Rising Tide: Urban Population and Climate Change, ” Prof. Balk, who also serves as acting associate director of the CUNY Institute for Demographic Research at Baruch, warns that as more and more of the coastal populations live in ever-expanding urban areas, they’ll have no where to retreat unless policy-makers take the initiative today.

New President for College of Staten Island

A West Coast educator with East Coast roots, Dr. Tomas D. Morales is returning to New York City as the third president of the College of Staten Island. Dr. Morales, who grew up in the South Bronx, has more than 30 years experience in higher education administration, including his stint as vice president of student affairs and dean of students at City College from 1994 to 2001. Most recently he served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at California State Polytechnic, Pomona. Dr. Morales earned both an M.S. and Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Policy Studies from SUNY Albany. One of his goals is to “promote higher academic standards while strengthening the relationship between the college and the residents of Staten Island.”
