John Jay's Freshman Vet
Back from a recent tour in Fallujah, Iraq, college freshman and US Army vet Chris Jaeger brings more to the table than the typical freshman forward. Jaeger, a member of the John Jay Bloodhounds basketball squad, sat down with Sports Week’s Tom Emberly to talk about dedication, teamwork and enduring long trips on the Long Island Railroad. Chancellor Goldstein Speaks to NYS Legislature
In testimony before the New York State Legislature, Chancellor Matthew Goldstein called for “sustained and predictable investment” for public higher education in New York State.
“It is our time to set a new course,” the Chancellor testified. “This is the time to strengthen CUNY and SUNY. This is the time to develop generations of graduates who will lead New York in every sector, from the technological to the cultural.”

New Look at Visa Program
The visa-waiver program — which allows most Europeans who travel to the U.S. as tourists entry without obtaining visas — should be re-examined, according to security experts. Professor Joseph King agrees, citing the recent spurt of homegrown terrorism cases in London and Madrid. “They are allowed to come to JFK without ever seeing a U.S. government official,” says Prof. King, referring to the 27 countries currently in the program. “In some countries, if you marry a citizen you get a passport within a year. They don’t have the background checks that we have.”

NYC: Immigrants Still Welcome
A report by the Center for Immigration Studies in Washington found that foreign-born New Yorkers are better off than immigrants in the rest of the country. Chancellor’s Report to the Board of Trustees
Chancellor Matthew Goldstein comments on the life and the passing of Chancellor Emeritus Albert H. Bowker, the implementation of CUNY’s new emergency notification system, the CUNY Alert System, the budget recommendations of Governor Spitzer and Mayor Bloomberg including a plan to hire 2,000 faculty in CUNY and SUNY beyond current hiring plans and a new $3 billion “innovation fund†that will encourage research throughout New York and boost the state’s economy.

Marathon Reading Featuring CUNY's Literary Superstars
Some of the most renowned names in fiction, Non-fiction and poetry are part of the creative writing faculty at CUNY. Novelist and Brooklyn College Professor Michael Cunningham, former U.S. Poet Laureate and Lehman College Professor Billy Collins and American Book Award winner, Professor Elizabeth Nunez of Medgar Evers College were among those who gathered recently at the CUNY Graduate Center to read from their work. The literary marathon is a showcase of CUNY’s creative writing talent, and sets the stage, as CUNY gets ready for its high profile participation in the 2008 Conference of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs.

Gov. Spitzer: Invest in CUNY, SUNY
Governor Eliot Spitzer is calling for a $4 billion investment in New York State’s Public Higher Education system. In his State of the State Address, the Governor proposed an endowment that would fund cutting-edge research and the addition of 2,000 full-time faculty at the State’s two public university systems. The proposals, which CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein calls “critical to the state’s future,†are based on recommendations made by the state’s Higher Education Commission.
