Research Grant Award from Amazon for the Bronx Community College’s Geospatial Center of the CUNY CREST Institute

December 7, 2018

The BCC Geospatial Center of the CUNY CREST Institute (BGCCCI) received a grant award from Amazon to conduct geospatial analyses in the cloud. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a secure cloud services platform, offering compute power, database storage, content delivery and other functionality to help businesses scale and grow.  AWS cloud products and solutions are critical to modeling spatial solutions using geospatial satellite data with increased flexibility, scalability and reliability.

The cloud credits from AWS (for 1 year) will be used to develop and design procedures for spatio-temporal analyses of time-series of geospatial data from the archives of BGCCCI. Research on near-real time geospatial data will also be conducted by using satellite data from other sources including the National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA). BCC-CUNY students will be involved as interns in the projects and will be supported by the ongoing National Science Foundation’s-Advanced Technological Education grant program. The projects will enable BCC-CUNY students to acquire critical workforce skills in data science said Dr. Bhaskaran who is an expert in geospatial technology and its applications. BGCCCI was also awarded a grant from NASA to create workforce skills in geospatial technology.

CUNY is a lead partner in Amazon’s expansion as the great public institution of higher education in New York City. The rich diversity of our student body — 35% of CUNY undergraduates were born outside the U.S. mainland and 76% are from underrepresented minority groups—mirrors that of the city. Because of our vast reach, and unparalleled ability to scale educational opportunities to the needs of so many different types of students, CUNY is positioned to equip large numbers of diverse New Yorkers to take advantage of these opportunities, and to provide Amazon and other tech companies with a robust pipeline of talent.

For more information contact Dr. Sunil Bhaskaran who is the principal Investigator of the grant award, as well as Director of BGCCCI & Doctoral Faculty at the Earth and Environmental Science at the Graduate Center.
