Dr. Heidi Jones and colleagues publish in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology: Performance of a Rapid Self-Test for Detection of Trichomonas vaginalis in South Africa and Brazil. The authors found that rapid point-of-care tests performed well for detecting trichomoniasis, a common sexually transmitted infection, even with the women performing the test on their own. These tests should be considered an alternative to syndromic management, the current standard of care in many resource-poor settings, as they are likely to improve detection and management of these infections.
