The Vice Chancellor’s Welcome Letter

October 1, 2007

Greetings to Students, Faculty, Administration and Staff,

Welcome to the new Academic Year, 2007 — 2008! And welcome to the debut of our new Student Affairs Division blog!

You and I are participants in an exciting age of significant transitions and raised expectations, both within and without the City University of New York. Nevertheless, the Student Affairs Division remains committed and intent on advancing our mission to serve and support an incredible student body and to help each student to experience academic success. This academic year, Student Affairs will fashion our new blog to keep you abreast of developing plans and initiatives. We invite you to weigh in with us. Our objective is to facilitate the sharing of ideas and ignite the kind of dialogue that helps to improve the quality of campus life.

We are continuing our plans to re-engineer the Division of Student Affairs. We’re adding new staff, programs and services, and we’re considering new ideas. At the same time, we’re harnessing the wealth of experience already here to sharpen our focus on all that’s important to CUNY—the big and small things that make a difference day to day. Our goal is to build a “World-Class Student Affairs Division.”

What is the meaning of a World-Class Division? It is competitive and non-static. It is an empowering community that provides:

  • Excellence in student programs and services;
  • An environment and climate supportive of both diversity and civic responsibility;
  • Creative, collaborative approaches, plus new tools and techniques;
  • Outstanding outreach where personnel and activities exemplify the highest standards of professionalism.

We welcome you to let us know how we’re doing. What’s more, provide us with constructive feedback. We believe this is the only reliable method to embrace the challenges and excitement the year is sure to bring!
