The Vice Chancellor’s Student of the Year Award Recipient: Ms. Mehak Kapoor, John Jay College of Criminal Justice

Biography: Mehak Kapoor

Mehak Kapoor will be graduating from John Jay College with a Bachelors of Science in Economics and minors in Philosophy and English. Her exceptional grade point average of 3.929 has earned her membership into the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and for the past three consecutive years she has been a part of the Dean’s List. Ms. Kapoor has received numerous awards and scholarships including Dean’s List honors, Captain Edward Leuchs Scholarship, Upper Division, Maria I. Ramirez Scholarship, Rising Sophomore Scholarship, Peter F. Vallone Scholarship and the Advanced Mediator.

vcawardssmall Ms. Kapoor has been an exceptional student leader. She has served as President, Vice President, and Sophomore Representative of Student Council; served as a Peer Ambassador for Student Affairs; and served as a Peer Mentor for First Year Experience. Ms. Kapoor organized a domestic violence panel where attorneys and nonprofit organizations were invited to speak to increase awareness of domestic violence, explain the early red flag signals, and inform students about resources. As a result, one student sought help after two years of abuse. Most notably, during her tenure as Student Council President, Ms. Kapoor successfully led her fellow students in a campaign to increase the student activity fee, which has not been increased since 1988.

In addition to her work at John Jay College, Ms. Kapoor has also contributed to her local community by volunteering as a Peer Mediator at William Cullen Bryant High School, served as a volunteer tutor for young people in her community and served as an intern at GDAP Strategies.

The many opportunities in life that have been afforded to Ms. Kapoor have led to her desire to give back to others. She is pursuing law school and has an ambition to be an immigration attorney.
