Joseph K. Awadjie Elected University Student Senate Chair, 2014-2015

Awadjieusschair2014JOSEPH K. AWADJIE, B.S., is currently pursuing a Master of Science Degree at Brooklyn College, specializing in Natural and Behavioral Sciences. In October 2014, he was elected to be the twenty-ninth Chairperson of the University Student Senate (USS) for 2014-2015.

Born and raised in Ghana, Mr. Awadjie is also fluent in the languages of Twi, Fanti and Ga. Since emigrating from Ghana, Mr. Awadjie was drawn to CUNY because of its rich diversity and broad service to New Yorkers of all backgrounds. Mr. Awadjie is dedicated to ensuring that students have an active role in university governance, and is committed to improving the quality of a CUNY education through advocacy at the university, city, and state levels.

Mr. Awadjie received his Bachelor of Science from Brooklyn College in 2007. He served as a Senator in the Brooklyn College Student Government, on the Forensics Debate team and the Academic Club Association, and was captain of the men’s soccer team. Shortly upon returning to Brooklyn College for his Master’s degree, Mr. Awadjie was elected Vice President of the Graduate Student Organization, as well as the USS Vice Chair for Fiscal Affairs.

During his tenure as USS Vice Chair for Fiscal Affairs, Mr. Awadjie was an integral part of the grassroots campaign that restored a Merit Based Scholarship within the New York City Council Budget. With strong support from the City Council Committee on Higher Education, $11.1 million was included in the FY2015 Budget for a Merit Based Scholarship for CUNY students. Over 13,000 students will receive the scholarship next year.

In addition to his position as USS Chairperson and CUNY Student Trustee, Mr. Awadjie currently serves as the President of the Graduate Student Government at Brooklyn College, as well as Second Vice President of the Brooklyn College Alumni Association.
