New York City Veteran�s Business Counselor Position Description The New York City Veterans Business Advisor provides a comprehensive range of small business based assistance to veteran entrepreneurs and veterans thinking of starting a small business. Including one to one client counseling in the area of business plan development; analyzes, prepares and structures financial statements, such as cash flow projections, income statements and sources and uses statements; provides assistance in automated and manual record keeping systems and assists clients with market re�lated issues such as advertising, promotional functions, market surveys and other related areas. Advisor is responsible for the implementation of long-term business training, networking with veteran organizations, SBDC Regional centers in New York City , and coordination of mentorship for eligible veterans-including disabled veterans-using available resources and SBA resource partners. Advisor Implements and/or participates in training sessions to veterans sponsored by the SBDC and provides follow up services as necessary to attendees. Sessions are in many forms including long term classroom situations, single and multi day conferences where relevant topics are discussed in open forums, and in other public situations. Gathers written feedback from assisted clients for program service refinement and promotional purposes. Acts as a clearinghouse for information for clients and other interested individuals and refers, when necessary, those individuals to outside entities that can provide additional support services.
Other Duties:
Complexity of Duties (in order of priority) Providing quality one to one advisement to a veterans and their families requires a wide breadth of knowledge in many areas. Many clients can be serviced on a short term basis while other clients require long term counseling depend�ing upon the client's level of expertise or the sophistication of the venture. Sufficient organizational skills are critical in maintaining a high level of activity while adapting to the time sensitive nature of business decision making. Conducting an SBDC sponsored training event is a complicated task that involves careful planning. Substantial advance work is performed to a) identify a topic that effectively addresses an identified need in the business community, b) secure the services of appropriate experts in the field, c) select time, date and location for the event, d) be available to provide follow on one to one counseling to attendees when requested and e) gather feedback from attendees to evaluate the quality of the event and to help identify topics for future events. Establishing a comprehensive network of professional contacts for referral purposes is an important component of an advisor's responsibilities. The credibility of the advisor and the program can be jeopardized if a referral is made to an individual or organization that is ill suited to meet the client's needs. New contacts are established on an on going basis so that resources can be utilized in response to an ever-changing business climate. Advisor is responsible for quarterly and annual program reports
Salary:$35,000 – $44,000
Core Competencies/Qualifications:
Experience The Advisor must have extensive experience working with and counseling veterans and veteran-owned businesses and have no less than three years experience in small business or related technical assistance environment. The advisor must have demonstrated experience working with culturally diverse groups of people. The advisor should be proficient in using the Internet, Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word. The advisor must be able to travel. The business ownership experience and a Bachelor�s Degree in the area of business or finance are highly desirable. Veterans of the US military preferred. Education The position requires a Bachelors Degree in the area of business, management, finance, economics or related field.
