The League 1199 SEIU Training and Upgrading Fund

The League 1199 SEIU Training and Upgrading Fund develops, implements, and helps facilitate a number of training and education programs for eligible 1199 members, that incorporates a broad range of services, including counseling, tuition assistance, and collaborative agreements with colleges and universities throughout New York State. The Fund has worked with the City University of New York on many innovative projects that have enabled students to climb career ladders in health care and increase their employability. The following are collaborative programs offered by the Training & Upgrading Fund through the City University of New York:

The Tuition Voucher Program

This program allows students to attend courses at any CUNY campus without having to pay up-front tuition costs for college credited courses that lead to a degree diploma that can be used for advancement with the participant's employer, or advancement in health care or a related field. Eligible 1199 members may receive a voucher for up to six (6) credits per semester, but not more than 24 credits per year.

Health Careers College Core Curriculum (HC4)

HC4 is a college program that allows students to take a core of classes to receive up to 34 credits from the City University of New York. The classes can be applied to a variety of associate and baccalaureate health care degree programs, such as Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Radiologic Technology, EMT, Physician Assistant, Pre-pharmacy, Social Work, Nursing, and others. After taking twelve (12) credits, students are required to declare a major area of concentration so that their program of study is consolidated and comprehensive. Classes are offered at sites throughout New York City.

Certificate Programs

Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling (CASAC)

The CASAC training and certification program will provide participants with clinical and theoretical foundations in alcohol and substance abuse counseling, and prepare them for the certification exam. This program is designed to encourage new entrants into the field in order to fill a shortage area, and for currently employed alcohol and substance abuse counselors so that they can complete certification requirements that comply with national standards. The curriculum consists of 350 hours of didactic instruction in the field of alcohol and substance abuse, and 300 hours of supervised clinical work. Participants are eligible to receive a training certificate after the 350 hours of didactic instruction and become employed while in the supervised clinical.

Nursing Programs

Registered Nurse AAS to BSN Degree

In this program, students are required to take two courses per semester for the Fall and Spring academic year, and one course during the Summer. Those students with two-year Registered Nurse degrees will have the opportunity to upgrade to a four-year BSN degree in order to increase their marketability and expedite their progress up the nursing career ladder.

Foreign Born Registered Nurse

In this program, foreign born Registered Nurses who are currently working out of title will have the opportunity to serve as RNs in this country. This is an 18-month program, offered at selected CUNY campuses, that, according to transcript evaluation, will allow participants to challenge out of courses in order to expedite the training. In addition to the instructional modules, this course of study will also include a preceptorship, conducted by a CUNY faculty member, that will address issues within the American Nursing model, cultural diversity, and skills specific to the Registered Nurse.

AAS Nursing Degree Programs for Non-RNs

The Degree Completion Stipend and the Accelerated RN Program are designed to graduate students already enrolled in RN program in an expedient manner. These programs are offered on a full and part time basis and provide opportunities to cut down on working hours in order to devote more time to course and clinical work.
