The School of Architecture, Urban Design and Landscape Architecture
at City College offers a Master of Architecture degree for students
who already hold a baccalaureate in architecture, and in Fall 2004
will introduce a second master’s program for students whose
background is in liberal arts.
The 42-credit Master of Architecture program is directed at students
who already hold a baccalaureate degree in architecture who wish
to deepen their design abilities and expand their knowledge of contemporary
theory, technology, and environmental systems.
The program includes three studio courses, that provide in-depth
studies of architectural problems that precede construction. Students
also have the opportunity to take a number of elective courses in
areas of their special interest, either within the School of Architecture,
Urban Design and Landscape Architecture, or at another CUNY institution.
The 108-credit Master of Architecture program that will debut in
Fall 2004 is designed to impart to students who hold a liberal arts
degree mastery of the fundamental skills and ideas needed for the
practice of architecture in the 21st century.
The required curriculum for the 108-credit program will cover the
full range of topics necessary for students starting their architectural
studies "from scratch." These include basic design, structures
and environmental systems, architectural history and philosophy,
and the ethics of the profession. The principal medium for exploring
these fundamental skills is the design studio, where students undertake
architectural problems of growing complexity over the three years
of the program, using the city as a pre-eminent site for study.
Students have the opportunity to take a substantial number of electives
in addition to required courses.
