One of the nation’s top schools of social work and one of
the most diverse, the Hunter College School of Social Work is the
only public graduate school of social work in New York City. The
School has a strong commitment to educating social workers to serve
a diverse population in an urban environment.
The School offers several options leading to the Master in Social
Work. These include a two-year, full-time, program; a one-year residency
program for professionals with at least two years of employment
in social work; a part-time program; an advanced standing program
for outstanding BSW graduates; a three-year program for college
juniors; and the Bank Street dual degree program for those interested
in working with pre-school children and their families.
The 60-credit curriculum includes core courses in social welfare
policy, human behavior, social work practice methods, and research.
Students may choose to concentrate in one of six fields -- adults,
older adults and family; children; health and mental health; work,
employment and rehabilitation; community development, prevention
and social justice; and new populations and emerging issues. Course
work is augmented by supervised field work at one of several dozen
public and private social service agencies and organizations.
Social workers provide vital lifelines in unions, industry, hospices,
hospitals, mental health and substance abuse centers, senior centers,
settlement houses, day treatment programs and schools, as well as
public and private agencies. The School has a broad network of alumni
that assist in placing graduates throughout the New York metropolitan
area.
