The Master in Urban Planning program at Hunter seeks to prepare
professional planners who are well-versed in planning theory and
methods, but also have an area of specialized practice. While covering
the fundamental skills required of the modern planner, the 60-credit
program provides flexibility to accommodate the special interests
of each student.
Students take 27 credits in the core planning curriculum, 12 credits
in an area of concentration, six credits in a planning studio course
that provide real experience in applied planning, and 12 electives
to allow for exploration of a range of planning topics. Each student
works closely with a faculty advisor to design a two-year curriculum
plan.
Areas of planning concentration offered include: housing and real
estate, economic development, land use design, transportation and
environment, human services, and general practice.
Each student must complete at least one 3-credit internship, either
with city, suburban or regional planning agencies; neighborhood
development groups; municipal housing or budgeting units; planning
journals; or other approved groups. For many students, field experiences
have led to full-time employment after graduation.
The department also offers a number of paid graduate assistant opportunities
for students to work closely with faculty on research grants. Students
with multiple professional interests can pursue joint degree programs
with other New York City Universities.
