Spelling Bee Champ Seeks to Hone Editing Skills

Amy Goldstein has put the loss of a national spelling bee
championship behind her. In 1998, she achieved fourth place at the
Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. Since then, she’s been
building a career fixing others’ mistakes. As Editor in Chief of
the Knight News at Queens College, where she was a member of the
CUNY Honors College, she helped improve the paper’s reputation
after the college’s administration warned the staff to improve or
watch its paper shut down. “It’s one of those things I’m good at,”
said Goldstein. “I enjoy making people’s writing better.”
Goldstein just completed her Bachelor’s in general linguistics with
a minor in journalism and is interning this summer with the Dow
Jones Newspaper Fund program at the Knight Ridder news bureau in
Washington, D.C. “I’m hoping for someone who’s going to rigorously
edit me,” she said about pursuing a graduate journalism degree.
