Online From Iraq: Dentist Turned Blogger Comes to Learn the Journalistic Tools

Can a dentist turned blogger help change the lives of Iraqis? Zeyad A. is willing to try by taking the skills he’ll learn at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism back to his country. Currently, he writes a blog called “Healing Iraq” and is a regular contributor to Internet sites of major outlets like The New York Times, The Guardian, and The Washington Post. For Zeyad, the experience of becoming one of the most read Iraqi bloggers has been life-altering. “In my blog, I aimed for fairness and balance,” wrote Zeyad in an essay for his application to the School of Journalism. Zeyad, who doesn’t reveal his last name on his blog to protect his identity, has covered demonstrations, violent clashes between various groups, and the death of his cousin who drowned after an encounter with American soldiers. “I wish to improve and build on these skills in order to introduce new methods that would help develop and enrich Iraqi online journalism,” he wrote.
