Ernesto Malave

CUNY’s Board of Trustees appointed Ernesto Malave Vice Chancellor for Budget and Finance. Malave, who has served in administrative posts at CUNY for two decades, including seven years as the University’s Budget Director, was interim Vice Chancellor for nearly a year. As the University’s chief financial officer, he oversees and manages finances for all 19 campuses and the central administration.

Noting his long CUNY service, Chancellor Goldstein said he was “especially pleased that he started his career at the University” in 1983. Malave was a student at BMCC, where he was Student Government President. His B.A. is from the College of New Rochelle.

In his new position, Malave will represent the University on all operating budget matters. His duties include management of CUNY’s Budget, Treasury, Procurement, Internal Control, and Controller’s offices. He will also oversee preparation of the University’s annual financial statements and annual operating budget. He is also charged with managing CUNY’s investment portfolio.

At the Board’s March meeting, Malave fondly recalled his first job as an Office of Admissions Services advisor: “During those 18 months at OAS, I began to appreciate the special role CUNY plays in the lives of so many New Yorkers.…I had the opportunity to visit many New York City high schools to instill the value of higher education in 16-year- old high school juniors, as well as serving as an advisor to incoming students. It was a very rewarding position.”
