Presidents of Baruch, City Tech to Step Down

Baruch College President Edward V. Regan recently announced his retirement. The former New York State Comptroller from 1979 to 1993 and veteran of more than 30 years of public service, who assumed leadership of the College in 2000, said he will step down at the end of the 2004-5 academic year.

Regan, who as Comptroller was the sole trustee of the state pension fund, had many ties to the local business and finance community, notably as chair of the Municipal Assistance Corporation and as a director, trustee, or member of Oppenheimer Funds, the Brookings Institute, and the Committee for Economic Development.

At New York City College of Technology’s convocation on February 5, President Fred W. Beaufait also announced his resignation, saying that “when I accepted this job I promised five years—and believe it or not five years have passed.” Beaufait, a professor of civil engineering who arrived at City Tech from Vanderbilt University, will remain in office until his successor is chosen. After that, he will presumably have more time to devote to his other life as an artist. Beaufait’s brilliantly-colored acrylics on canvas were featured in the December 2001 CUNY Matters.
