On October 12, 2011, CUNY will celebrate the resolution adopted by the New York State Legislature renaming the SEEK Program The Percy E. Sutton SEEK Program. Sponsored by Assemblyman Keith Wright and Senator Dale Volker, the justification for the bill, which took effect July 2011, reads as follows:

"A political pioneer, The Honorable Percy Ellis Sutton, as a member of the New York State Assembly, created the Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge (SEEK) Program in 1966. This program allowed thousands of promising students from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to attend college at one of the City University colleges with the help of State funding.

The SEEK Program offers a unique and supportive educational opportunity to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, may of whom have had inadequate academic preparation for college-level coursework. SEEK was designed to assist students with the intellectual potential to succeed in college who lack the educational foundation and economic resources necessary to pursue a degree.

This bill honors the memory of this tremendous individual and the countless individuals he helped throughout his lifetime."

The film entitled "Second Chances: The CUNY SEEK and CD Story", produced by Sara Porath at CUNY-TV, chronicles the ground-breaking history of the SEEK and the College Discovery (CD) Programs, with testimonies and recollections from those who inaugurated the programs and those who benefited from them.

The film pays eloquent tribute to Special Programs, featuring many of the elected officials who were directly involved in the founding of the SEEK Program; educators and administrators associated with the development of Special Programs throughout the University; alumni, whose participation enabled them to achieve their personal and professional goals; and others who give voice to the realization of dreams.
