SUMMER INTENSIVE ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAM
FOR ENTERING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS (SIELP)
2010: July 6-August 17
Program
Six-week intensive English language summer program, held on four CUNY campuses:
30 hours a week of instruction, including 4 hours of reading/writing/listening comprehension/oral communication and
Internet research; 1 hour of ESL-focused physical activity; and 1 hour of guided conversation practice at lunch.
Students
Entering ninth grade English language learners, at an intermediate level or higher, seeking to improve their
English language skills in preparation for success in high school.
Note: Entering 10th grade English language learners may apply to the programs at Hostos Community College and New York City College of Technology.
Curriculum
Intensive, history-based, English language curriculum, requiring students to:
- Read two complete novels, My Brother Sam Is Dead and War Comes to Willy Freeman
- Write multiple drafts of 4 compositions
- Write daily entries in a reading response journal
- Learn word processing
- Complete an Internet research project
- Make trips of cultural interest in support of the curriculum
- Use the resources of a CUNY college
Assessment
Student progress reports are made available both to parents and to the appropriate high school in the fall.
