In accordance with Article VI of the University Faculty Senate (UFS) Charter, the general charges for this committee are to maintain vigilance for threats to academic freedom at CUNY; to draft statements on appropriate issues for Executive Committee and UFS endorsement; and to receive and evaluate inquiries from individual faculty members and college faculty groups about possible violations of academic freedom. Furthermore, the committee examines whether there are forms of assessment at CUNY which might pose potential threats to academic freedom. Working closely with the Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs, when necessary the committee discusses trends in governance dynamics at CUNY in recent years, and reports on any developments that may affect faculty participation in governance.
