More about Dance to the People

2014 | College of Staten Island

Under the leadership of Geneva Manley and Maira Duarte, Dance to the People is designing a program that bridges two facets of the dance world: education and performance. While in residence at the College of Staten Island, the collective will experiment with themes, composition, and the thinking body within the context of a laboratory for movement research. They will present a work-in-progress showing at the conclusion of the semester. Free dance classes are held in Studio 220, Building 1P, Center for The Arts, College of Staten Island.

The director of Dance To the People, Maira Duarte, is a Mexican dancer, choreographer, and dance educator who relocated to New York in 2008. She holds a B.A. in Social Communication from the Metropolitan Autonomous University of Mexico and a M.A. in Dance Education from NYU/ Steinhardt. Her choreography has been presented in Barcelona, Uganda, Mexico City, Guanajuato, Puebla, New York, and New Jersey, and she has taught extensively in schools in NYC and New Jersey via the non-profits Education in Dance, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and New Victory Theatre. Most recently, she was a visiting professor in dance at the University of the Americas in Puebla, Mexico. She is also an independent filmmaker, currently working on a documentary about dancers in New York.
