Dance To The People

More about Dance To The People

2015 | College of Staten Island

Dance To The People, an open collective of dancers looking to generate opportunities for dance training, movement research, and choreography, has been in residence at the College of Staten Island since fall 2014. During this time, Maira Duarte, working with students at CSI, has developed Narrentanz (Dance of Fools), a dance-theater piece based on images of madness evoked by Michel Foucault’s Madness and Civilization. This new work will be presented on November 6.

The director of Dance To the People, Maira Duarte, is a Mexican dancer, choreographer, and dance educator who relocated to New York in 2008. She holds a B.A. in Social Communication from the Metropolitan Autonomous University of Mexico and a M.A. in Dance Education from NYU/ Steinhardt. Her choreography has been presented in Barcelona, Uganda, Mexico City, Guanajuato, Puebla, New York, and New Jersey, and she has taught extensively in schools in NYC and New Jersey via the non-profits Education in Dance, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and New Victory Theatre.
