More about Decadancetheatre

2014 | Hunter College

During its residency, Decadancetheatre is developing the Hip Hop Nutcracker, which will premiere in December 2014 at the United Palace Theatre in Washington Heights. They are re-imagining the Tchaikovsky score and classic holiday narrative through an old school hip-hop dance vocabulary to create a new holiday tradition for a contemporary, urban audience. Decadancetheatre will share an informal workshop/lecture-demonstration about their creative process with the Hunter College community, including their collaboration with an MC, DJ, and violinist.

Decadancetheatre has been redefining the image of women in hip-hop since 2004, taking female dancers out of the background of music videos and into the forefront of theatrical performance. Through performances, workshops and creative commissions, the company represents a global vision of hip-hop with a roster of dancers from the U.S., France, Germany, Norway, Nigeria, and Japan. Led by 2012 “Outstanding Emerging Choreographer” New York Dance and Performance Award (Bessie) nominee, Jennifer Weber, Decadancetheatre has performed at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Kennedy Center, B Supreme Festival of Women in Hip Hop at London’s Southbank Center, LEAP Festival in Liverpool, New York City Center, San Francisco Hip-Hop Dance Festival, and Bumbershoot in Seattle.
