2017-18 | York College

Matthew Westerby is originally from the U.K., trained at Laban (London), and founded Matthew Westerby Company in 2009. The Company has been presented around New York and beyond, including Dixon Place, Triskelion Arts, Green Space, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, the Evolve Festival, Westfest, Great Friends Dance Festival (RI), Naugatuck Valley Community College (CT), Connecticut Dance Theatre (CT) & the Theatre of the Performing Arts (CT). The Company has also presented two New York seasons, at University Settlement (2011) & at the Hudson Guild Theatre (2014).

The Company creates projects that foster community, building works that are accessible to all as participants and audience. Westerby’s choreographic approach is inclusive yet challenging by nature, asking each performer for unique contributions to the process. His work is characterized by a pure movement aesthetic combined with an abstract yet emotional connection to music and a dedication to spatial design.

The Company works extensively in dance education, providing a year-round dance residency program at Far Brook School (NJ), with Project Poetry Live! working with public schools in Hartford, CT, and with both Children’s Aid Society (Harlem) and Hudson Guild Theatre Company (Chelsea). MWC has received grants from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Creative Engagement program for the past two years to support free, outdoor performances in Harlem providing performing opportunities for local children, youth and adults.
