I’m pretty confident most of you would agree that our annual fall ritual – classes starting and campuses filled with the energy and optimism of the new academic year – represent the best of our traditions. I hope, for my sake, that you also enjoy, or at least tolerate, the annual welcome back letter. I want to share a few thoughts as the new academic year begins and express my thanks for all you do for The City University of New York and our amazing students.

On a tragic day in April, 1968, our nation suffered a profound blow with the assassination of a great American, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Those who understood the immense power of his message of equality and opportunity promptly sought to ensure that his mission would endure, and just four days later legislation was introduced to make Dr. King’s birthday a holiday so that the nation would honor his leadership and keep his goals alive. It went nowhere.

Seventy years ago, the United States did something historically rare and remarkably farsighted. At enormous cost, we had fought and won a brutal World War, and after that victory, instead of retrenching our leaders launched another battle, this time to win the peace in a way that, they hoped, would make it permanent.

Thank you very much, Steve. I am deeply grateful to New Yorkers for Children and your executive director, Saroya Friedman-Gonzalez, for what is a very special honor—for The City University of New York and for me—named for a person who defines the term “public servant.”
