Sustainable CUNY Conserves
CUNY Conserves is a University wide effort to reduce energy consumption across CUNY’s 29 million square feet in over 300 buildings. CUNY Conserves provides a platform for implementing and sharing operations and maintenance (O&M) best practices, training, data and analytics, and manages a revolving Sustainable Investment Fund (SIF) in addition to providing assistance on implementing Campus Sustainability Plan actions. CUNY Conserves has deployed a robust O&M program that includes building management system optimization, inventorying and prioritizing critical equipment and associated preventative maintenance, real time energy management and load control, as well as training for building operators. This program has been given further impetus by the Governor’s Executive Order 88, NYBuild Smart, which mandates CUNY to achieve a 22% reduction in energy use by 2020.
Sustainable Investment Fund
Sustainable CUNY secures and manages multi-millions in funding for energy conservation measures as well as operations and maintenance projects including a revolving loan fund, the Sustainable Investment Fund (SIF). SIF is a revolving fund that supports near and short term projects on CUNY campuses which produce energy savings and other sustainability benefits. Savings produced by efficiency measures are used to pay back the fund to ensure support for future projects.
Boots to Suits
Sustainable CUNY initiated a ‘Boots to Suits’ program in 2016 to link administrators with facility directors and managers. By creating an interactive platform of communication, the program provides a unique educational opportunity for members of the senior administration to understand the technicalities of equipment operations and maintenance. In this manner Boots to Suits has created a broad community of CUNY professionals from all sectors that work together across the campuses to understand the necessary investments that can help reduce energy use and GHG emissions.
