Write a letter to the dean of the college in which you argue for expanding and renovating the bookstore or for adding more computers to the computer labs. Sample Question 2The Board of Education has received two proposals to develop a program to help recent immigrant students learn English. One proposal is to hire teachers for a bilingual education program. In this program, students would take core courses, such as history, math and science in their native languages. The other proposal is to create an English immersion program in which core courses would be taught entirely in English. Write a letter to the Board of Education curriculum committee in which you argue for a bilingual education program or for an English immersion program. Explain how your choice will best help recent immigrant students learn English.

Sample Question 3An undeveloped parcel of land has been donated to your community, along with substantial funds to develop either a waterfront park, which would be the only large recreational space in the area, or a housing complex, which would provide homes for most of the homeless families currently forced to live in temporary shelters. Write a letter to the city council in which you argue in favor of one of these projects. Explain how it would best serve the needs of your community’s citizens.

Sample Question 4 A Parks Board in a large city has received a generous donation and wants to use the donation to benefit the city as a whole. The Board is considering two options, but there is only enough funding for one. One option is to improve the city's parks by planting more flower gardens and creating more recreational areas. The other option is to improve the overall appearance of the city by planting flower beds and small trees along city streets and at intersections. Write a letter to the Parks Board in which you argue for improving the city's parks or for improving the appearance of the city, explaining how your choice will benefit the city as a whole. Begin your letter, “Dear Parks Board:”
Sample Question 5 A multi-million dollar grant has been given to one low-income community to help change the lives of its members. The Committee for a Better New York is deciding on two proposals for the use of this grant. One proposal is to replace the community's overcrowded and crumbling schools. The other proposal is to build new housing to replace the neighborhood projects. There is funding available only for one proposal. The Committee will base its recommendation on the proposal that benefits the greatest number of community members. Write a letter to the Committee in which you argue in favor of building new schools or building new housing. Explain how your choice would help change the lives of the community's low-income residents. Begin your letter, “Dear Committee for a Better New York:” |
